Green group pleads with Hungary to preserve ‘right to environment’ in constitution

PRESS RELEASE

[April 11 2011, Brussels] - Environmental group EEB has written to Hungarian parliamentarians ahead of a redraft of the national constitution imploring them to protect a constitutional right to a healthy environment, which under current proposals would be removed.

EEB said that Hungary set a strong precedent by introducing an ombudsman for future generations to ensure this right is respected – a true novelty in Europe. However, there appears to be a chance now that this position will be abolished.

“Although the Hungarian constitution is of course a matter for the Hungarian people we felt it important to point out the interest this particular issue has among environmentalists across the EU,” said Pieter de Pous, EEB Interim Secretary General.

The groups are asking the parliamentarians to consider, before casting their vote on Monday April 11, the inspirational example that this ombudsman for future generations is for the rest of Europe and vote to maintain this.
