Waste
What is the EEB doing?
The EEB is committed to following-up and commenting on the ongoing legislative work of the Commission. Our aim is to introduce ambitious environmental goals and quantified targets to guide waste policy revision and implementation.
The 2010 launch of the revision process of the thematic strategies on Prevention and waste should be seen as a major opportunity to improve waste management practices and obligations.
The EEB is particularly involved in linking waste policy with other environmental policies, so as to create an overall consistency for a sustainable future. We advocate an internalization of environmental costs in the products and services generating waste. Ecodesign of products and services and Individual Producer Responsibility (IPR) regarding end of life costs are two major mechanisms to ensure that waste issues are considered as early as possible in the product life cycle.
Ecodesign can, among other things, minimize the amount and toxicity of waste whilst increasing recycling performances. Individual Producer Responsibility can drastically improve end of life management.
The EEB believes that Ecodesign requirements and Individual Producer Responsibility are powerful tools that should be systematically considered and integrated into any Environmental policy.
