Ecological Product Policy

What is the EEB doing?

EEB is working to promote a coherent product policy framework in a number of ways:

We are an active member of the EuP Consultative Forum where we have joined forces with other NGO networks to campaign for an ambitious implementation of the ecodesign directive. Please see the website at www.coolproducts.eu.

A key priority is to secure ambitious energy requirements in all product categories and to clearly challenge the industry beyond business as usual performances’ improvements.

An essential challenge for EEB is to move beyond the energy use aspect of products Environmental requirements for implementing measures are, so far, almost exclusively limited to the energy performances in use stages. Whilst being relevant to an energy using product, the environmental requirements must also include stipulations for: energy and global warming potential; chemical contents; and resources efficiency.

One major concern for the EEB is the Self Regulated Initiative (SRI - or so called Voluntary Agreements). This allows producers to set environmental requirements and monitor progress of Ecodesign legislation implementation. This obviously does not amount to a legal standard depends on the good will of producers.

The involvement of national NGO’s in member states will be a vital element in achieving ambitious results.
