Ecolabel

What is the EU doing?

In April 2009 the European Parliament and the European Council reached an agreement on the revised Regulation on the European Ecolabel Scheme.

This agreement renewed the European Institutions’ commitment to use the Ecolabel to encourage the sustainable production and consumption of products. This is to be done by setting benchmarks and promoting the best products available on the European market in terms of environmental performance.

In January 2010 the revised Regulation on the European Ecolabel Scheme entered into force (click here to download).

The European Ecolabelling Board (EUEB), where EEB represents environmental NGOs, continues to act as consultative forum to the Commission and is in charge of leading the development and revision of Ecolabel Criteria.

These Ecolabel Criteria define the minimum (ecological) requirements for a product to be met and are developed for each product group. The final criteria as well as draft criteria and minutes of meetings are published on the Ecolabel website of the European Commission.
