Air
What is The EEB doing?
The EEB has been actively involved in the development of EU air pollution legislation for many years. We work to ensure the adoption and implementation of effective legislation that aims to end the negative effects air pollution has on people and ecosystems.
We played an active role in the work of the Clean Air for Europe Programme (CAFE) and the development of the 2005 Thematic Strategy on Air Pollution. We are now closely following the revision process of the latter.
The EEB supports a strict enforcement of the Air Quality Directive and follow its implementation at national level in close cooperation with EEB members.
We follow developments in EU legislation relating to air pollution from mobile sources. In particular, the EEB supports stronger regulation of air pollution from ships which currently produces l=high amounts of sulphur and nitrogen oxides. Both damage human health and ecosystems. Together with partner NGOs, the EEB is actively campaiginig to reduce air pollution from ships at both European and international levels.
The NEC Directive is one of the pillars of EU’s air quality legislation. Its revision is part of the implementation of the Thematic Strategy on Air Pollution. This much-needed revision must produce tighter emission ceilings for 2020 for the four regulated substances (nitrogen oxides, sulphur dioxide, non-methane volatile organic compounds and ammonia). The first-ever national caps on emissions of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) are also expected to be introduced.
In 2010, the EEB will follow the revision process of the Deco Paint directive which is essential to further reduce VOCs emissions from paints and varnishes.
