Clean Air! Everywhere
Everyone has the right to live in a healthy environment but a majority of the EU’s urban population is inhaling dirty air. This is why we are calling for Clean Air! Everywhere, calling on EU and national authorities to take care of our air.
In March 2011 EEB organised a parliamentary evening for Clean Air! Everywhere jointly with the “Soot-free for the Climate” campaign. Among the panel were the likes of Commissioner Potocnik, Green MEP Bas Eickhout and ALDE MEP Holger Kramer to discuss the state of implementation of the Air Quality Directive in European cities and the different tools available to achieve cleaner air in Europe. Ahead of the release of the air quality city ranking, please read this brochure to find out what can be done in our cities to decrease air pollution.
In October 2010 Europeans took part in the Brussels Marathon to show their support for clean air all across Europe, and to call on the EU to act now.
What can be done to clean our air?
The EU has the ability to contribute to cleaning our air, using the National Emissions Ceilings (NEC) Directive.
Unfortunately, the much needed update of this has been postponed since 2005 it looks as if it will not be revised until 2013, which will be the 'Year of Air'.
European countries also have the responsibility to ensure that they keep their air within EU air quality limits, but many are far exceeding these limits. Along with our members, we are calling on member states to take action on our dirty air.
The European Environmental Bureau has long campaigned for better air in Europe. Click here to read more.
