Thousands of technical standards have an impact on the daily lives of EU citizens as they provide the technical specifications used by manufacturers and public authorities to prove that a product or a process meets legislative requirements.
Setting up legislation objectives often requires technical support. Technical standards are used to check whether or not specific goals have been met.
A standard is a technical document that sets out specifications, processes, criteria, methods or practices, guideline or definition designed to be used as a rule. Standards are of a massive importance in legislation’s implementation, as they are used by companies to prove their compliance with a piece of regulation.
EEB co-founded an independent NGO, called ECOS, which aimed at recognising the importance of standardisation in environmental policy, and the need for a strong environmental NGO presence in their development. For more information on ECOS, please look at their website.
EEB has held the Presidency of ECOS since its foundation in 2001, and maintains a close working relationship with the organisation.
