Enforcement
What is the EEB doing?
Much of our work is carried out jointly with experts from EEB member organisations and the Justice & Environment Network (J&E).
The correct transposition and enforcement of existing environmental legislation has always been a priority for the EEB. It is also part of many of its policy papers, such as the Memorandum the EEB submits to each EU Presidency outlining its priorities for their coming term. Please see, for example, the Memorandum to the Swedish Presidency.
We are aware of the difficult task and the insufficient capacity of the Commission to deal with all aspects of enforcement in a timely and effective manner. The EEB is prepared to play a role and contribute to better enforcement.
At national level, EEB members are monitoring the application of environmental laws and highlighting shortcomings to the EEB as their Brussels voice or by submitting complaints to the Commission. The EEB raises such shortcomings in its meetings with high ranking EU officials including the Commission President and Commissioners.
