Biofuel

What is the EEB doing?

The EEB, in cooperation with experts from its biodiversity and agriculture working groups, has been closely involved in the negotiations and implementation of the biofuels policy in the Renewable Energy Directive.

It has produced a comprehensive analysis of the EU’s biofuel policy in conjunction with other NGOs such as BirdLife and Transport & Environment. This includes recommendations on how to minimise the negative consequences of this policy and possibly avoiding such consequences altogether.

The priority of the EEB’s implementation work lies in the development of new carbon accounting rules for biofuels and bioenergy. These must acknowledge their real carbon impacts and on this basis set new sustainability criteria and measures.
