What is the EEB doing?

Our working group has existed since 1997 and has closely followed the negotiations on the Water Framework Directive and its implementation. Together with WWF we have carried out a series of detailed assessments on implementation and the effectiveness of the Water Framework Directive (WFD) in delivering any tangible results.

Apart from taking our own initiative in tracking implementation we take part in the body which oversees the implementation of the Directive - the Strategic Coordination Group (SCG) of the Common Implementation Strategy (CIS). The SCG is chaired by the European Commission and is made up of national government and stakeholder representatives. It prepares and adopts guidance documents on important implementation issues such as environmental objectives and exemptions, and pressures and impacts.
