What is the EEB doing?
People are often unaware of just how threatened our soils are. The degree and impact of destruction is not easily noticeable and soil degradation is a slow and unspectacular process. Raising awareness of this often ignored resource is a major challenge.
Although the EEB is strongly supportive of the Commission's move to legislate in this area, it is also highly concerned about the lack of substance - most importantly the lack of clear targets in the proposed Directive.
More worryingly still, there is a serious risk that what little substance there is in the Commission's proposal will be further weakened in by countries in Council discussions. We are therefore working with our members to raise public and political awareness about this fundamental resource and the need for an ambitious European Soil Policy.
We have also met with the director of "Dirt! The Movie" and arranged screenings of their film at the European Parliament (please see 2009 Events ). Click on the logo below for more information:
