Biodiversity & nature
Biodiversity
Biodiversity, the variety of life on Earth, is essential to sustaining the living networks and systems that provide us all with the vital services our lives depend on. Yet this variety of life is being lost at an alarming rate.
The earth has not witnessed such a loss of species diversity since the last major extinction which wiped out the dinosaurs. The major cause of this loss is due to the level of pollution produced by industrialised countries and their demand for natural resources. The EU, for example, uses the equivalent natural resources of 2.5 planet Earths.
This is not only a problem because of the intrinsic value of biodiversity. The continued loss poses a direct threat to every person on this planet due to the vital materials and services it provides, such as the clothes we wear and the food we eat.
